It's no secret that people have beaten all meaning out of the word "literally."
Sure she's a liar, but her pants were literally on fire? I'd put money up to say that blaze had another cause. Perhaps she was telling stories around a campfire or turned her back on a malicious and unruly charcoal grill.
But when we have to pay tolls every time we drive on certain U.S. highways constructed from the taxes we have already paid, then I can safely say that this is literally highway robbery. Or at least robbery while on a highway. Or robbery by way of highway.
